Socks 101

Supplies
- Approximately 350 yards fingering weight superwash wool/nylon sock yarn
- Set of 5 double pointed needles size 1 1⁄2 or size needed to obtain gauge
- Basic knitting supplies – tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors, ruler, small crochet hook.

Skills needed
Basic knitting skills of knit, purl, increases and decreases should be mastered before class.
Knitting in the round, picking up stitches, simple short rows and Kitchener stitch will be covered in class.

Size
The pattern used will be for a medium sized women’s sock.

Gauge
32 sts/36 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch on size 1 1⁄2 needles or size needed to obtain gauge. I do not get gauge and use a size 1 needle myself, so be prepared to use some trial and error to find a good size needle for you.

We will be learning to make socks from the top down, so you will need to use a very stretchy cast on so that the sock will fit over your heel. I use Jeny’s Stretchy Slipknot Cast-On, and recommend that you learn this cast on before class. It is much more stretchy than any other cast on I have tried and worth the trouble of learning.
